arc is comprised of Indo-Canadian musician Stephen (The Venk) Venkatarangam (modular/semi-modular synths, granular samplers, plucked strings and effected flute and voice), Annabelle Brault (modular/semi-modular analog synths, granular effects and, sequencers), and Adrian Aitken (digital drums). The three came together in 2018 with the intent to create improvised music that is not only in conversation with one another, but one between humans and organic technology. The group is inspired by the power of group improvisation coupled with the controlled unpredictability of modular synthesis, traditional instruments, and other electronic technology. In their sonic and often spontaneous conversations, arc creates dream-like meditative soundscapes with modular stereo-panning timbral textures, soft melodic layers, and driving rhythms. In live performance the group integrates analog/digital video synthesis with the voltages and triggers of their instruments, which their performances unified both as sound and visual experiences. The music encourages reflection, movement, and emotional release.
Aitken is a certified elementary music teacher and both Brault and Venkatarangam are PhD candidate researchers at Concordia University. They frequently present papers on the use of music and technology as a therapeutic medium.
