MTL Electronic Music Updates: February 2023
Published
January and February have been two productive months for MTL Electronic Music. In this post, we highlight some of the updates to the platform and discuss the underlying philosophy that guides these developments. We have made several substantial updates to the Artists, Venues, Blog, Podcast (new!), and Music (new!) tabs, so let us discuss each of these in turn.
Podcasts
We are thrilled to announce a new podcast, the Artist Interview Series! Our first interview with Kridelka is now available in the Podcast tab. The podcast is currently hosted on Youtube and Spotify with more platforms coming soon. In the podcast, we ask artists questions about their compositional process, the underground electronic music scene in Montreal, and listen to and discuss their original music. We hope you enjoy the first episode with Kridelka and look out for interviews with more artists in the near future.
Artists
MTL Electronic Music now has profiles for over 60 Montreal artists! We are happy to highlight 45 producers (many of whom also DJ), 55 DJs, 10 live electronic music artists, 3 artists that also serve as educators, and 2 agents (booking, event coordination, and more).
At the time of publication, most of the artists featured on this site represent the Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood with 25 artists. The second biggest neighborhoods are Ville Marie (downtown, 9 artists) and Rosemont (9 artists). Behind these three are Hochelaga (4 artists), Saint Henri (3 artists), and Old Port (3 artists). We think more artists are waiting to be discovered, so look out for them as we add more artists in March and April.
Venues
We now have profiles for venues in Montreal that regularly book local electronic music artists. In line with the “Artists” section, our goal is to make it easier for fans to find venues that cater to their music tastes. Similarly, we want to simplify how artists find venues that they could perform at and make it easier for venues to find new artists that fit their goals.
The venue profiles, much like the artists, are tagged with genres which sort into taxonomies with corresponding artists. Venues are also tagged with information including whether it is a Nightclub, an Event Space, and whether they serve cocktails or wine. These tags are intended to help you find the most appropriate venue for your plans.
Blog
Our blog interface has been resdesigned. We now highlight the MTL Electronic Music (MEM) playlist and the 6 most recently added artist profiles on desktop interfaces. In addition to the cosmetic changes, we have improved the backend to allow more authors, added the ability to easily embed artist profile cards, and more.
If you are interested in writing blog posts for MTL Electronic Music, please contact us on instagram or by email. We are especially interested in adding articles written in French. We are open to new topics so long as they focus on the local Montreal music scene.
Music
The Music tab now has a playlist with write-up that features music by local Montreal producers. You are sure to find something you’ll like by browsing the variety of music in subgenres from House to Hard Techno. We plan to update the playlist throught the winter and will soon add a “New Releases” section. We want to make it easier for you to listen to and find music by local Montreal artists.
Upcoming Additions to the Website
- Artist Search ability
- Collective Profiles
- Education Tab
Our Philosophy
We believe that electronic music is an essential part of Montreal’s vibrant culture. To this end, we are focused on highlighting and elevating this critical part of the city. We recognize that Montreal is home to numerous electronic artists including veterans and newcomers alike and we want our platform to make it easier for you to find and connect with them.
We believe in collective success: when one artist rises, it elevates everyone they are connected to. Accordingly, we find that it is helpful to offer a space that encourages connections and community engagement.
Our platform focuses on three pillars:
- Community Development
- Collaboration and Education
- Artist Development & Promotion
We have many exciting plans for 2023 including an online community forum (it is currently in Alpha, so let us know if you’d be interested in joining!). We are also hosting our first Artist Development event Tune-Up in collaboration with Dome of Faith. Tickets are now available, so buy them before they sell out! The venue is BYOB and will go until late. You are sure to network with many interesting people that play a role in the electronic music scene. We are very excited about this first event and look forward to offering more artist development opportunities in the near future, so stay tuned for updates.
2023 is off to a great start!
